Environmentally Friendly Ideas
Here we collect the best tips we know of and come across. Many web sites and sources have their own huge lists, but our list is specifically designed for the busy and poor student! We update the list when we come across something new, and your own safety tips can also show up here! Energy use
- Enjoy a nice shower, but remember: 5 minutes in the shower equals two loads in the washing machine! There are a lot of other ways to relax that don’t use electricity at all.
- Don’t boil more water than you need. If you boiled too much, why not invite your neighbor for coffee?
- Use efficient light bulbs, and turn off the lights when you aren’t in the room.
- Use surge protectors and extension cords with an “on-off” switch so you can turn of all your appliances at once. And you save electricity too.
- The elevator is for people who can’t use the stairs. Taking the stairs is a great way to stay in shape!
Staying warm
- Get cosey by wearing sweaters and multiple layers. That way the tempterature doesn’t need to be so high.
- Close doors and warm up each room to the desired temperature.
- Turn down the heat at night. Most people sleep best at 15-18 degrees.
- You don’t need to air out your apartment for more than 5 minutes.
- Cover the floor with a carpet, so your feet stay warm.
- Are you still cold? Take a trip to the gym and warm yourself up!
Consumtion and waste
- Show you care by bringing a reusable bag to the grocery store.
- Don’t throw away things that still work. Instead, give them away. Or maybe you could even sell them?
- Oslo will soon be recycling plastic over the entire city. Then we’ll be able to recycle almost all packaging. Try to buy things with packaging that can be recycled.
- Do you need a little workout? Take your garbage to the nearest garbage center. It’s good to get outside and it’s good for the environment!
- Electronic equipment can’t be thrown out with the rest of the garbage. You can always deliver electronic waste to the same place you bought it.
- Don’t buy things you don’t really need. Think about what really makes you happy.
- Think long-term and buy things that last. They cost a little more, but you usually save money over time.
Food
- Eat local food, or food that has traveled a short distance. It’s not just good for the environment- it tastes better too!
- A person shouldn’t eat more than 50-60 grams of protein per day. Most of us eat more that in meat alone. Meat is also very energy intensive. Make a difference, and only eat what you need.
- Don’t throw away food. Instead, make something new and exciting with the leftovers!
- Eat organic food when you can.
Travel
- Are you going home for a visit? Or on vacation? It’s much more relaxing to take the train than to fly. And they let you bring your shampoo with you!
