About turning off the lights, I have a big problem. I hope you have good suggestions. I study in Informatics building. I try to turn off the lights in every occasion when I'm the last to go home specially on Fridays, the corridors', the bathrooms, ... but people don't agree with me and my professor asked me strongly not to turn off the lights because they are low-consumption type or halogen lamps and they break if we turn them off frequently. But still I think there are many lights in the whole building on the whole year around and probably in the whole university ( I don't know about other departments). I'm wondering while there is no motion detector sensors installed to turn off the light automatically.
Have a nice weekend,
Azadeh
As for heating, switch it off at night (more healthy for your lungs, too - use a hot-water bottle in your bed; no need to grapple with a snoring partner on 2m2:) ) and when at uni. These small rooms of SiO heat up very quickly - there is really no need to keep heating 24/7. In scandinavian winter, one should wear thick, woolen clothes in 2 layers anyways and not run around in a T-shirt and shorts. >22°C room temperature are exagerated.
- switch PC/other technical devices completely off(no Standby)
- dim the light of the display of your PC/phone/MP3
- don't use a hairdryer
- who needs a fridge in the norwegian winter? put your øl on the balcony and let your food cool down by the fresh and chilly air!
- use train/bus instead of airplane
- share a car, organize "travel communities"
- cook for more than just one meal and person
- instead of using an electrical mixer use your muscles
- don't buy more food than you actually need
- instead of sitting in front of a PC, TV, etc. choose some "outdoor" activities and/or meet some friends, re-discover boardgames
- use less soap/shampoo
- reuse "candlewax" (and old candle glasses) - be creative!
- use the backsides of all one-side printed sheets for notes
- gather clothes before washing them!
...to turn off the electric stove-top plate with many minutes remaining in cooking (heat continues after the electric is off).
One tip...
...to notice the label of packaged fruits and vegetables, and choose to buy those that come from closer places. For example...apples from Poland, not China.
2) do not drop the carbage on the ground there is an ashbin for it
3) while brushing the teeth
4) if you do not have dishwasher, fill the sink with water to wash the dishes
5) close the windows and the doors
6) share
7) do not waste
